“There are those who believe that life here began out there, far across the universe, with tribes of humans who may have been the forefathers of the Egyptians, or the Toltecs, or the Mayans. That they may have been the architects of the Great Pyramids, or the lost civilizations of Lemuria, or Atlantis. Some believe that there may yet be brothers of man, who even now fight to survive somewhere beyond the heavens." - Battlestar Galactica 1978

“Helena: Will they be happier when they can feel pain?
Dr. Gall: On the contrary. But they will be technically more perfect.”
― Karel Čapek, R.U.R.

Three high school kids, in a suburban wasteland at the foot of a mountain range, try to keep things together in the early-nineties.

To learn more about how Things from the Flood is played check out our primer episode.

To get a sense of where these characters started take a listen to our Tales from the Loop story:

The World: Pittsfield and the Lenox Loop.

Pittsfield, MA - in the Berkshire mountains on the border of NY and Western MA. In the 1940’s GE, MIT and a Federal Research Facility carved a particle accelerator into the deep rock beneath the mountain range just south in Lenox, MA. They also carved cooling towers from the rock itself. The loop passes just under Pittsfield proper. The center of the city the large GE plant has long since been abandoned and retrofitted into housing for refugees from the lowlands.

To the south, a mile or two down South St, HWY 20 is the turn off to Bousquet Mountain, a ski area. A bit further south are the cooling towers and the subsurface labs.

In ‘89 two things happened- the wall fell, ending the cold war, and the flood came. The Loop and its labs are suspected as causing the flooding, which spread out from the hills and turned the middle of New England into a massive tidal floodplain. Under severe scrutiny over its part in the flood GE and facing massive fines, declared bankruptcy.

Normally the death of the industry would kill a town like Pittsfield, but all the displaced people from Boston and the farmlands moved en-masse into the Berkshires, or neighboring upstate New York. Service industry sprung up along with real estate and other infrastructure works, the once sleepy, lightly industrial nearly rural Pittsfield, has become a bustling suburb to Lenox to the south.

Lenox itself has become a large city, though the cooling towers and structures of the now flooded and abandoned labs are given wide berth. The once spread out development south of Pittsfield center is now a dense suburban development. The ski lodge has been converted to Condos and year-round living.

The other big event to note, in 90/91 rifts began to open in the swamps to the East. Emerging from these rifts came the Beasts- large dark shapes in crystalline armor. The government scrambled and with the help of a quintet of mysterious giant robots, were able to repel the waves and waves of creatures. This threat has become a part of life after the Flood.

The Teens:

Ollie Barker - Lone Wolf (Dan McCoy) withdrawn and serious, sets themselves outside.

Chad Dawson - Party Animal (Stuart Wellington) drinking and partying his way through high school, assuming he every gets out.

Rush McKenzie - Hacker (Ken Breese) from exploring the outdoors to now exploring the wilderness of the early internet, he's put on weight and lost himself in conspiracy theory.

“Dreams do come true, if only we wish hard enough. You can have anything in life if you will sacrifice everything else for it.”
 J.M.Barrie

In a quiet tidal pool, by a cold dark shore, the spirits of drowned women await mortal petitioners who will accept their gifts.

Rusalka is still in progress and we were honored that the designer, Nick Wedig, allowed us to share a game with our listeners. Go check out his work at his Teapot Games site.

The Map:

To the South is the Shore. To the North West the Village. A stone alter and a configuration of stones rests near the edge of the pond closest to the village.
On the South side of the pond where the sea threatens to enter the pool, is a cannonball sunk in the silt. On Eastern bank a massive albino crocodile makes its home. Along the shore large poles are sunk into the sand and mud. They are topped with winding sheets that snap in the ocean winds.

The Characters:

Rurik (Amanda McLoughlin) - An aspect of moonlight, she wears flowers in her hair and ages with the phases of the moon, yo-yoing between a child and crone.

Marichka (Julia Schifini) - An aspect of tides, she has flowing seaweed for hair and jagged shark teeth.

Semyon (John Holt) - An aspect of sorrow, she is a paper thin spirit with tattered flaking edges.

Bohdana (Ken Breese) - An aspect of ghosts, her face is masked and her dress flows behind and seems to have no end.

"How doth the little crocodile
Improve his shining tail,
And pour the waters of the Nile
On every golden scale!

How cheerfully he seems to grin,
How neatly he spreads his claws,
And welcomes little fishes in,
With gently smiling jaws!"
— Lewis Carroll

During the setup Julia recommended the book Deathless by Catherynne M Valente. It is a telling of the Koschei the Deathless tale.

“But first whom shall we send
In search of this new world, whom shall we find
Sufficient? Who shall tempt, with wand'ring feet
The dark unbottomed infinite abyss
And through the palpable obscure find out
His uncouth way, or spread his aery flight
Upborne with indefatigable wings
Over the vast abrupt, ere he arrive
The happy isle?”

“Carnal embrace is the practice of throwing one's arms around a side of beef.”
― Tom Stoppard, Arcadia

The beast lopes across the face of a barren world. An entire civilization festers beneath its skin.

To learn more about how Downfall is played check out our primer episode.

The Haven:

The Glorge is a gargantuan creature of flesh that lumbers blindly, on multiple limbs, across the face of the world. In the dripping moist layer, between the thick folds of its skin and its oily pulsing muscle and flesh, an entire society has formed.

The Traditions:

Birth: Everyone in the haven can carry offspring and become pregnant. It is a little strange to not be pregnant. The spheres in their bodies of developing children are mirrored in the symbol of the cornucopia spilling grapes and fruits that is ever present in the iconography of the culture.

Communication: The common greeting is to make out with the person you're greeting. In this ritual you also exchange a metallic lozenge with a name etched on it. These are referred to as candies.

Justice: Secrets are the currency of the society. An entire 'secret' police force and the encouragement of gossip makes information a commodity and a liability. This behavior is encouraged by the allocation of sweet vat-grown tongue meat.

Death: A death that explores the heights of delicious pain and pleasure is a good death. There is an oil derived from growths plucked deep from the Glorge that offers altered and heightened perception and is used exclusively for death seeking.

Entertainment: The coming-of-age ceremony begins when the brood of children reaches the age of consent and partakes in a race into the depths of the Glorge to retrieve the largest cysts. The victor is named Master of Flesh and the others who survive the ordeal are granted a name etched metal 'candy' lozenge.

Relationships: It is forbidden to make emotional connections to others. People play games where they toy with others to make them have an emotional attachment. The only way to ceremonially purge this is to grow a vestigial heart and present it to the object of affection.

The Characters:

The Hero: Sheer, a Feel Agent for the secret police, has heightened senses in their tongue. They are a bit different in the society in that they have empathy that draws them towards reciprocation instead of playing games with other people's emotions.

The Fallen:  Master of Tongues, the leader of the secret police, seeks to maintain their control on the society.

The Pillar: Bloom, a peer from the same trial as the hero, works in the processing of the psychotropic Oil Macabre.
